Waves, the kinetic light installation created by KMA and commissioned by DanceDigital in 2009 is showing as part of the International Dance Festival Birmingham 2010. After dark the space outside Birmingham Hippodrome will become populated by hundreds of small objects, drawn on the pavement with light, that behave according to a simplified version of the laws of magnetism. When the space is empty of people, the objects will generate mesmerising patterns as they flow around each other, but when people enter the space they become active participants – as magnetic bodies themselves they disturb and redistribute the flow of energy through the system. With seemingly small interactions causing ripples throughout the piece as a whole, as they influence and manipulate the patterns of light and sight around them.
